Argentina has seen an explosion in genetically modified (GM) soy bean production with soy exports topping $16.5 billion in 2008. The fertile South American nation is now the world's third largest producer of soy, trailing behind the United States and Brazil. However, this lucrative industrial form of farming has come under fire with environmental groups, local residents, and traditional farmers reporting that GM soy threatens biodiversity, the nation's ability to feed itself, and health in rural communities.

Criticism of the soy farming model intensified recently when research released by Argentina's top medical school showed that a leading chemical used in soy farming may be harmful to human health. The study has alarmed policymakers in the South American nation.

A study released by an Argentine scientist earlier this year reports that glyphosate, patented by Monsanto under the name "Round Up," causes birth defects when applied in doses much lower than what is commonly used in soy fields.

The study was directed by a leading embryologist, Dr. Andres Carrasco, a professor and researcher at the University of Buenos Aires. In his office in the nation's top medical school, Dr. Carrasco shows me the results of the study, pulling out photos of birth defects in the embryos of frog amphibians exposed to glyphosate. The frog embryos grown in petri dishes in the photos looked like something from a futuristic horror film, creatures with visible defects—one eye the size of the head, spinal cord deformations, and kidneys that are not fully developed.

"We injected the amphibian embryo cells with glyphosate diluted to a concentration 1,500 times than what is used commercially and we allowed the amphibians to grow in strictly controlled conditions." Dr. Carrasco reports that the embryos survived from a fertilized egg state until the tadpole stage, but developed obvious defects which would compromise their ability to live in their normal habitats.

Pointing to the color photos spread on his desk, Dr. Carrasco says, "On the side where the contaminated cell was injected you can see defects in the eye and defects in the cartilage."

For the past 15 months, Dr. Carrasco's research team documented embryos' reactions to glyphosate. Embryological study is based on the premise that all vertebrate animals share a common design during the development stages. This accepted scientific premise means that the study indicates human embryonic cells exposed to glyphosate, even in low doses, would also suffer from defects.

"When a field is fumigated by an airplane, it's difficult to measure how much glysophate remains in the body," says Dr. Carrasco. "When you inject the embryonic cell with glysophate, you know exactly how much glysophate you are putting into the cell and you have a strict control."

Glyphosate is the top selling herbicide in the world and is widely used on soy crops in Argentina ( used to feed cattle and other livestock which is then eaten by humans...)

Monoculture soy is grown on more than 42 million acres of fields across Argentina and sprayed with more than 44 million gallons of glyphosate annually. It is part of a technological package sold by Monsanto that includes Round Up Ready seeds GM to tolerate the herbicide glyphosate. This allows growers to fumigate directly onto the GM soy seed, killing nearby weeds without killing the crop. In the winter, crops are sprayed to kill off weeds and seeds are then planted without having to plow the soil, a process commonly referred to as "no-till farming." Nearly, 95% of the 47 million tons of soy grown in Argentina in 2007 was genetically modified, adopting the Round Up ready technology marketed by Monsanto.

The study on the top-selling agrochemical has alarmed policymakers, so much so that Dr. Carrasco has received anonymous threats and industry leaders demanded access to his laboratory immediately following the study's release. Industry leader Monsanto wouldn't talk to the Americas Program for this story, but in a press release on its website, the company says that "glyphosate is safe."

Many in the agro-business sector claim that Dr. Carrasco's study has little scientific basis. Guillermo Cal is the executive director of CASAFE—Argentina's association of agrochemical companies that counts Monsanto, Dow Agro-sciences, Dupont, and Bayer CropScience among its members. Cal dismissed the recent study conducted at the University of Buenos Aires. In an exclusive interview with the Americas Program, Cal rebuked Dr. Carrasco's study, stating, "There are hundreds of articles about the impact of glyphosate in amphibians and none of these articles have shown the disastrous effects that Dr. Carrasco is mentioning. I have the suspicion that these are headlines and probably [this study is a] politically motivated article."

On further investigation, it turned out that the studies that Guillermo Cal cited in the interview were all financed and conducted by the companies that market glyphosate. When asked about that Cal replied, "The developing companies are the ones that have to finance these studies because we need to have proof of the innocuous character of the product before the product is launched."

Since Argentina's soybean boom in the late 90s, clinical studies have been conducted in communities reporting suspiciously high rates of cancer, birth defects, and neonatal mortality. However, industry leaders also refute these clinical studies, saying they are anecdotal and have little scientific basis. Among a corporate controlled scientific community it is notoriously difficult for clinical studies to "prove" the link between environmental contamination and health results, since life is not a "controlled environment."

In a small town bordering soy farms in the province of Cordoba, the Mothers of Ituzaingo group was formed in response to sudden increases in the local cancer rate. Ituzaingo has 5,000 residents—in 2001 they reported more than 200 cases of cancer and by 2009 that number has jumped to 300. This is 41 times the national average. (I conducted this calculation: the national average or percentage is 0.145 of the population diagnosed with cancer—in this town 6% of the population has cancer.) They have fought for regulations against fumigating soy crops in residential areas and a ban of agrochemicals.

Sofia Gatica is an activist with the Mothers of Ituzaingo. Sofia joined the grassroots group after suffering the death of her newborn baby. Her daughter was still born with a malformed kidney. Her 14-year-old daughter is currently undergoing treatment for toxicity in the blood. The toxin was identified as endosulfan, an insecticide used on soy fields.

Gatica describes the many birth defects that have occurred locally. "We have had children born with only two thumbs and no fingers, malformed kidneys, children with six fingers. We have had babies born without an anus, or with malformations in the intestines."

After years of documenting the tragedies, the Mothers of Itzuaingo decided to take their case to the courts. In 2006, they won their lawsuit in the provincial Supreme Court. Based on their findings the court ruled to prohibit the use of agrochemicals within 1,000 meters of residential areas. The decision applies to the province of Cordoba while in the rest of the country farmers can continue to fumigate with no regulations.

The case of Ituzaingo is not an isolated case. For nearly a decade, communities have reported health problems from aerial and terrestrial fumigation with the arsenal of pesticides and herbicides used in industrial soy farming. And for nearly a decade they have been ignored. "Communities are literally fumigated with planes or with the terrestrial 'mosquito repellant' fumigations (similar to the DEET trucks used to fumigate U.S. neighborhoods in the 50s). Cases of health problems, miscarriages, birth defects, and cancer rates have multiplied at an alarming rate in communities surrounding the soy fields," says Carlos A. Vicente, head of information for Latin America at GRAIN.

The Campesino Movement of Santiago del Estero (MOCASE), a grassroots movement made up of traditional farmers and indigenous groups, has taken more than 100 accusations of agrochemical poisoning to court in Santiago del Estero. The only other case of a judge ruling against the use of herbicides occurred in the northern province of Formosa. The judge, Silvia Amanda Sevilla, was subsequently fired. No other judge in the country has ruled in favor of prohibiting fumigation using glyphosate or other herbicides and pesticides. The courts have either thrown out or ruled against every single claim brought by the plaintiffs. Darío Aranda, a journalist with the national daily, Página/12, has reported on numerous communities in soy-producing regions throughout the country that have faced severe health problems, including residents in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Entre Rios, Chaco, Santa Fe, and Formosa.

Worse yet, research shows that the mostly rural communities that suffer the negative health effects of fumigations have not benefited from the soy explosion. On the contrary, in most regions families have been pushed off land taken over by soy farming, leading to a loss of livelihood in addition to the severe health risks. According to a 2002 agricultural census, in four years more than 200,000 families were driven from their traditional farms, and most of the families relocated in working class belts outside of major cities.

Authorities and industry representatives maintain that the clinical studies and citizen complaints must be backed up by "serious studies" in order for them to act. Gatica says that GM seed and agrochemical companies have converted Argentina into an experimenting ground to test the toxicity of their herbicides and pesticides, principally glyphosate and endosulfan. "We can prove that agrochemicals have harmed us. We can prove this with studies and with whatever is left of our children," says Gatica. The anger in her voice reflects the grief and rage she has channeled into this David and Goliath battle.

Pesticides treadmill...

The expansion of soy means the increased use and concentration of glyphosate. Over time, Round Up herbicide loses its technological battle with evolution and new weeds develop that are more resistant to the herbicide, explains Javier Souza Casadinho, professor at the University of Buenos Aires and regional coordinator of the Latin American Action Network for Alternative Pesticides. "Producers must use more applications, and in higher doses with higher toxicity—the application has gone from three liters in 1999 to the current dose of 12 liters, per hectare," says Souza.

GM soy was swiftly approved for cultivation in Argentina in 1996, under former Agricultural Secretary Felipe Sola. A 180-page file report, prepared by GM giant Monsanto in English without a Spanish translation was the only document evaluated before Sola approved GM soy after only 81 days of review. The former secretary and investor in the soy industry won a seat in the legislature in the June 2009 elections, riding in on his opposition to President Cristina Kirchner's decision to increase the export tax on soy. Argentina's current Secretary of Agriculture Carlos Cheppi refused the Americas Program's formal request for an interview. His press secretary said Ricardo Gouna is "unwilling to talk about the use and regulation of agrochemicals in Argentina's soy industry."

The study in Argentina is not the only research concluding that the number one selling herbicide may be harmful to human health. Gilles-Eric Seralini, professor at the University of Caen and specialist in molecular biology, led a study that concluded the herbicides in the Round Up Ready package causes cells to die in human embryos.

"Even in doses diluted a thousand times, the herbicide could cause malformations, miscarriages, hormonal problems, reproductive problems, and different types of cancers," said Dr. Seralini in an interview with Dario Aranda published in Página/12. Round Up Ready is currently marketed in more than 120 nations. Latin American nations Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay are the region's fastest growing markets.

Since Carrasco's study was released in April, the NGO Association of Environmental Lawyers (Aadeaa) petitioned the Supreme Court to ban the use of glyphosate and endosulfan. Policymakers are currently considering the petition. The National Committee on Ethical Science has also recommended that the Agricultural Ministry create an investigative committee to urgently evaluate the effects of the number one selling herbicide in Argentina. Dr. Carrasco says that his study and previous studies should serve as a red-light warning for policymakers charged with evaluating regulations for glyphosate. The herbicide is currently categorized as a level 4 toxin—the lowest level possible for agrochemicals. In science and medicine, when you suspect that something dangerous is occurring, you need to implement the precautionary principle, which dictates: "I need to take precautions; I can't ignore the problem; I can't wait until there are a lot of deaths to intervene." Unfortunately, Argentine courts and federal, state, and local governments appear not to agree. Given the enormous economic stakes, precaution may come too late as soy has invaded the majority of Argentina's highly fertile land leading to irreversible social, health, and environmental consequences.

Genetically-engineered corn, soybeans, and cotton now account for the majority of acres planted to these three crops. A model was developed that utilizes official, U.S. Department of Agriculture pesticide use data to estimate the differences in the average pounds of pesticides applied on GE crop acres, compared to acres planted to conventional, non-GE varieties.

The basic finding is that compared to pesticide use in the absence of GE crops, farmers applied 318 million more pounds of pesticides over the last 13 years as a result of planting GE seeds. This difference represents an average increase of about 0.25 pound for each acre planted to a GE trait.

GE crops are pushing pesticide use upward at a rapidly accelerating pace. In 2008, GE crop acres required over 26% more pounds of pesticides per acre than acres planted to conventional varieties. The report projects that this trend will continue as a result of the rapid spread of glyphosate-resistant weeds.

To all journalists working in Sweden: with this letter I want to tell you that you have a choice. Either you immediately, and I do mean immediately, start reporting what is really going on in this country and all over the world - or else, as of today, you will be regarded as accomplices in this close to unimaginably horrendous criminal act against the people of Sweden and against the people of the entire planet.

I repeat: To all journalists working in Sweden, either you immediately start reporting what is actually going on in the world, or else you are considered enemies to the people of Sweden.

Passivity is no longer an option. Silence is no longer an option. Propaganda is no longer an option. Disinformation is no longer an option. As of today, wednesday, the 11th October 2009, you will start to write, tell and show us the truth.

Your employers, the corporate media in Sweden and around the world, are right now under the control of the most evil international crime syndicate that has ever existed. We know that they have siezed your base of operation.

Aftonbladet, Expressen, Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Metro, The Swedish Radio, The Swedish Television, TV4, and all you other lackeys of evil - we know that right now, you are all being used as the central unit of propaganda, in Sweden, for the most cynical conspiracy that humanity has ever seen.

We know that this conspiracy stretches all the way from Wall Street, to the White House, to the World “Health” Organization, to the UN, to the European Union, to the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, to the upcoming meeting in Copenhagen, to media moguls, to the world’s leading bankers, to top politicians, to the swedish government, to swedish banking, to the swedish press, to the swedish drug agency, and to corresponding institutions all across the world.

I understand if this sounds unpleasant, but this is nothing compared to how unpleasant things will become if we all don’t take this absolutely seriously. Right now. Today. Absolutely seriously. This is nothing to smile about. Nothing to dismiss. Nothing to ignore. The crime that is right now taking place in front of our eyes is a part of the most hideous, and sophisticated, conspiracy that can - unless you and we take immediate action - bring more pain and suffering to both us and coming generations than we ever could have imagined.

In the case you choose to call this crazy conspiracy theories without even informing yourselves about what is actually going on in the world: stop this nonsense right away.

The truth is out. We know what is going on. The majority of the people in Sweden and around the world are not aware of the things that are taking place, but there are enough people who are aware for me to, once again, repeat this ultimatum: Starting today, the 11th of November 2009, you will start working with conveying the truth about the swine flu, the vaccine and the ongoing mass vaccinations to all people in Sweden.

If you refuse to meet this demand, then I, and all others who are aware of what is going on, and all of those that within a near future will start to understand, will - for the rest of your careers, for the rest of your lives - hold you responsible for just standing on the side and doing nothing but observe, while this disgusting crime was taking place.

All of you swedish journalists, it is your job to scrutinize those in power. It is your job to report to us when they abuse their power. It is your job to inform the swedish people about current events. Right now, you are not doing your job. This will result in fatal consequences, unless you immediately start doing what you are supposed to do and what you have to do.

Even though I do hope that you come to your senses, it is not something that I neither expect nor rely on. For this reason, I’ve started the page “VaccinationNews“. It is very important that we do not take our current communicative freedoms for granted. It is equally important that we spread this information that governments, mainstream media and all those in power want to keep away from us, as much as possible and as quickly as possible.

Communicate with the people around you, both in everyday life and on the Internet. Talk to each other, discuss, ask questions, think critically, exchange ideas, send links, post information on facebook, twitter, blogs, in different forums, and spread the word that our future is right now at stake and do it in every way possible.

For every day that passes, our freedoms are being taken away from us, both on the web and in our communities, without most of us even noticing it. If we want to come out of this fight victoriously, then we need to exercise our rights and use all our means of communication to the fullest. Now, right now, right away.

Unfortunately, I believe many of you, both journalists and citizens of Sweden, have still not grasped how serious this situation is. Let me speak clearly: Our lives are at stake. Our childrens lives are at stake. Our grandchildrens lives are at stake.

If you have ever wondered how it could happen that Hitler, about seventy years ago, could come to power and terrorize the entire world for a decade without noone stopping him, then you don’t have to study any history books, all you need is take a look around you, right now, in your own life, in the world today. This is how it happened. This is how it happens.

One of the big questions of this century is whether humanity has learned the lesson from the mistakes that were committed back then, in the middle of the last century, or whether this time as well, we will stand paralyzed, blind for the truth, ignorant, obeying authorities, intellectually and emotionally hypnotized, while the most powerful people on the planet will control humanity as they please, steer us into depravity, as were we a herd of stupid, little sheep?

This is what these people think of us, as sheep. As fools. As slaves. It is up to us if want to accept this, because that is what we have been doing for hundreds of years, or whether we finally, once and for all, will realize what a superb creature each and every one of us in fact is, and then take away both the power positions, means of power and resources from these utterly few but incredibly evil people. I believe the time has come for this. I hope so. I know so.

If you journalists only dare to not start reporting what is going on the world, then we, the people of Sweden, will hold you responsible for indirectly having worked against this and thus contributed to an imeasurable amount of suffering for our friends, our sisters and brothers, our families, our children, our grandchildren, and also for yourselves. Don’t be mistaken; right now, when you are reading this, is the time when you have to make a decision.

The truth is out. This whole story will come to daylight. Believe nothing else. If you think you can get away with your silence, then you are wrong. If you think that you will be able to blame someone else, then you are wrong. If you believe that you are powerless, then you are wrong. You have to start doing your job.

If anyone of you put up a single more misleading placard about the vaccine against the swine flu, if anyone of you show a single more lying news report about the ongoing mass vaccinations, if anyone of you keep on avoiding to give the swedish people all the information that governments and rulers around the world are intentionally keeping away from the citizens, if anyone one of you keep feeding us with the illusion that everything is okey and there is nothing to worry about, if any of you, starting today, the 11th of October 2009, keep on lying to the swedish people, deceiving the swedish people, give disinformation to the swedish people, spread distraction to the swedish people, then you will have to pay very dearly for this.

To all of us, I want you to answer us the following two questions:

1) Where are your loyalties - with the people of Sweden or with the most insidious criminals on the entire planet?
2) From whom do you take your orders?

Now back to the swedish journalists. I suspect that many of you, since a long time back, have realized that there is something fishy going on. I suspect that many of you, since a long time back, are functioning as tools for the propaganda machines that are called Aftonbladet, Expressen, Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Swedish Radio, Swedish Televison, and other devices for intense mass indoctrination of the people of Sweden.

I suspect, as well, that many of you have already started digging into this whole thing and possibly even, to a certain extent, have engaged in some sort of journalistic work. But for some reason, all of you are quiet. I suspect that you have been forced to not write about these matters. I suspect that you are afraid of getting sacked if you start doing what you are supposed to do. I even suspect that some of you have been threatened. I regret this. But if you believe that this an acceptable excuse for your silence, then you are wrong.

If you do not break this silence immediately, then you will - when all of this is brought to dayligt, which it soon will be - from the entire population of Sweden, receive such an avalanche of fury that whatever it is that is right now frightening you will appear as a drop in the ocean in comparison.

The fact that you call yourselves journalists is a disgrace without equal. FRANCE SUPREME COURT FINDS MONSANTO GUILTY OF FRAUD

France's highest court has ruled that U.S. agrochemical giant Monsanto had not told the truth about the safety of its best-selling weed-killer, Roundup. The court confirmed an earlier judgment that Monsanto had falsely advertised its herbicide as "biodegradable" and claimed it "left the soil clean." Roundup is the world's best-selling herbicide.

French environmental groups had brought the case in 2001 on the basis that glyphosate, Roundup's main ingredient, is classed as "dangerous for the environment" by the European Union.

In the latest ruling, France's Supreme Court upheld two earlier convictions against Monsanto by the Lyon criminal court in 2007, and the Lyon court of appeal in 2008, the AFP news agency reports.

Monsanto already dominates America’s food chain with its genetically modified seeds. Now it has targeted milk production. Just as frightening as the corporation’s tactics, including ruthless legal battles against small farmers, is its decades-long history of toxic contamination.

Now France's highest court has confirmed an earlier judgment that Monsanto falsely advertised its Roundup herbicide as "biodegradable" and said it "left the soil clean" -- claims that could not be further from the truth.

The Reality about Roundup

Monsanto long used the slogans, “It's Safer than Mowing," "Biodegradable," and “Environmentally Friendly" to describe Roundup -- until the real effects of this toxic herbicide were revealed and they were forced to discontinue their deceptive advertising.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp, is the most commonly reported cause of pesticide illness among landscape maintenance workers in California. Additionally:
The surfactant ingredient in Roundup is more acutely toxic than glyphosate itself, and the combination of the two is even more toxic.

Glyphosate is suspected of causing genetic damage.

Glyphosate is acutely toxic to fish and birds and can kill beneficial insects and soil organisms that maintain ecological balance.

Laboratory studies have identified adverse effects of glyphosate-containing products in all standard categories of toxicological testing.

In one animal study, rats given 1,000 mg/kg of glyphosate resulted in a 50 percent mortality rate, and skeletal alterations were observed in over 57 percent of fetuses!

This is very concerning because millions of pounds of Roundup are used every year on U.S. gardens, lawns and farms, especially on GM crops that are engineered to be Roundup resistant. Roundup works by inhibiting an enzyme called EPSP synthase, which is necessary for plants to grow. Without it, plants are unable to produce essential proteins so they slowly yellow and die.

Monsanto developed a cash cow when they created not only Roundup, but also their genetically modified “Roundup Ready” crops.

Roundup Ready soybean, cotton and corn crops are the world’s largest group of genetically modified crops. In fact, the GM Roundup Ready gene is part of more than 75 percent of soybeans, 65 percent of cotton and 10 percent of corn grown in the United States.

This particular variety of GM crops became so popular because it allows farmers to spray Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide directly onto their fields without harming the crops. Ordinarily, if you were to spray Roundup, or any other glyphosate-based herbicide, onto a plant, it would die.

Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops, however, produce an enzyme that has the same function as EPSP synthase, but is not affected by Roundup.

As you might imagine, the use of Roundup herbicide has increased dramatically since the GM Roundup Ready crops were introduced, and serious problems have been reported ever since.

Roundup Residues are Toxic

It’s widely known that GM Roundup Ready crops, which are very common in the United States, contain Roundup residues. A study published earlier this year even showed, for the first time, just how toxic these residues may be to your health.

The study found that residues of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide found in GM food and feed can cause cell damage and death, even at very low levels. The authors of the study said their research "... points to undesirable effects which are currently masked or hidden from scientific scrutiny."

Even when researchers tested formulations of Roundup that were highly diluted (up to 100,000 times or more) on human cells, the cells died within 24 hours.

They also found damage to cell membranes and DNA, along with an inhibition of cell respiration.

Further, the researchers discovered that the mixture of components used as Roundup adjuvants actually amplified the action of the glyphosate, making at least one of its metabolites even more toxic. The researchers wrote:

“This work clearly confirms that the adjuvants in Roundup formulations are not inert. Moreover, the proprietary mixtures available on the market could cause cell damage and even death around residual levels to be expected, especially in food and feed derived from Roundup formulation-treated crops.”

With findings like these, you can see just how outrageous Monsanto’s claims really were. Roundup is not “biodegradable,” safe or in any way good for people or the environment.

Not by a long shot.

Monsanto’s Sordid Past

It does not come as a surprise that Monsanto lied about Roundup, given their extremely under-handed track record. There is easily enough “dirt” on Monsanto to fill an entire book.

Perhaps their biggest assault to your food supply is what’s known as terminator technology. These are seeds that have been genetically modified to “self-destruct.” In other words, the seeds (and the forthcoming crops) are sterile, which means farmers must buy them again each year.

The implications that terminator seeds could have on the world’s food supply are disastrous: the traits from genetically engineered crops can get passed on to other crops. Once the terminator seeds are released into a region, the trait of seed sterility could be passed to other non-genetically-engineered crops, making most or all of the seeds in the region sterile.

If allowed to continue, every farmer in the world could come to rely on Monsanto for their seed supply!

Monsanto -- the convicted liar’s club -- has also worked its way into varying high-level positions in the U.S. government, ironically in positions that are meant to protect your food safety!

The New Senior Advisor for the FDA is a Former Monsanto VP!

Michael Taylor, a former vice president of public policy and chief lobbyist at Monsanto Company, is the new senior advisor for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Who is Michael Taylor? He is the person who “oversaw the creation of GMO policy,” according to Jeffrey Smith, the leading spokesperson on the dangers of GM foods.

Smith continues:

“If GMOs are indeed responsible for massive sickness and death, then the individual who oversaw the FDA policy that facilitated their introduction holds a uniquely infamous role in human history. That person is Michael Taylor. He had been Monsanto's attorney before becoming policy chief at the FDA. Soon after, he became Monsanto's vice president and chief lobbyist.”

The FDA policy being referred to is the 1992 GMO policy, which stated:

"The agency is not aware of any information showing that foods derived by these new methods [genetic engineering] differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way."

In reality, there was major concern among FDA scientists that GM foods were in fact different than natural foods, and that their creation could prompt unknown and unpredictable health problems.

Along with being a key player in the initial pushing of GM foods onto Americans’ plates (without any required safety studies), Taylor also oversaw the policy regarding Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH/rbST).

This growth hormone, which has been banned in Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand because of cancer risks and other health concerns, was approved in the United States while Taylor was in charge at the FDA. Smith writes:

“Taylor also determined that milk from injected cows did not require any special labeling. And as a gift to his future employer Monsanto, he wrote a white paper suggesting that if companies ever had the audacity to label their products as not using rbGH, they should also include a disclaimer stating that according to the FDA, there is no difference between milk from treated and untreated cows.”

Taylor’s white paper, which again was untrue as even FDA scientists acknowledged differences in the rbGH milk, allowed Monsanto to sue dairies that labeled their products rbGH-free.

You Can Fight Back Against Monsanto

By boycotting all GM foods and instead supporting organic (and local) farmers who do not use Monsanto’s GM seeds, you are using your wallet to make your opinions known. This means abstaining from virtually all processed food products (most are loaded with GM ingredients) and sticking to fresh, locally grown, organic foodstuffs instead.

Monsanto reported a fourth quarter loss of $233 million in October 2009, largely due to a drop in sales of its Roundup brand -- so I am confident that many are wising up to the underhanded dealings of this evil company.

Effects of the herbicide Roundup on human embryonic cells

Professor Séralini’s group (1), in the University of Caen, France, just published a study on the previously unknown toxic effects of Roundup on human embryonic cells.
Roundup is the major herbicide in use worldwide, including on GMOs for food and
feed. The embryonic cells are from a line cultivated in the laboratory and their use does not necessitate embryo destruction. The group wanted to confirm and detail the understanding of the effects already observed on placental cells, as published by Séralini’s group in 2005.

Following comparison, it appears that embryonic cells are far more sensitive. The
deleterious results of Roundup are noticed at very week doses (the product sold in stores is diluted up to 10,000 times). Sensitivity is confirmed in particular for the disruption of sexual hormones at non toxic levels, especially on fresh placental extracts. The maximal active dilutions correspond to less than the residues in discussion to be authorized in GMO feed in the United States.

It is evidenced that the herbicide Roundup, as sold on the market, is far more toxic than the product which is known and approved to be its active ingredient: glyphosate. The gaps in European legislation to study the effects of mixtures and hormonal disruptions are underlined.

This work may be of help in better understating the problems of miscarriages, premature births or sexual malformations of babies, in particular in agricultural workers families.

Environmental Contamination and Toxicology » directed by Dr. Doerge from the Food and

OGM: HAUSSE EXPONENTIELLE DES HERBICIDES...

Aux Etats-Unis, les cultures OGM ont provoqué une hausse de la consommation d'herbicides par les agriculteurs : + 172 000 tonnes entre 1996 et 2008, selon le rapport d'une association spécialisée dans la sécurité alimentaire, The Organic Center.

Dans son rapport intitulé "Impacts des cultures génétiquement modifiées sur l'emploi de pesticides aux États-Unis", basé sur les données du ministère de l'Agriculture américain, The Organic Center déclare que l'utilisation d'herbicides a flambé au cours des dernières années, augmentant de 172 000 tonnes entre 1996 (année de l'autorisation des premiers OGM) et 2008. Près de la moitié de cette augmentation est survenue en 2007 et 2008. En revanche, les quantités d'insecticides épandues ont baissé de 29 000 tonnes. La balance des pesticides reste donc largement négative. Et la tendance s'accentue.

Les super-mauvaises herbes

En cause, les méchantes super-mauvaises herbes, qui ont développé des résistances aux herbicides, naturellement ou par transfert de gènes. Les agriculteurs confrontés à ce nouveau fléau sont donc amenés à multiplier les traitements. D'une part, ils paient les graines trois fois plus cher (l'innovation a un prix), d'autre part, le coût des traitements phytosanitaires grimpe à vue d'oeil. Ce qu'on appelle un fiasco total, pour une technologie censée réduire les intrants et les coûts de production ?

Aucun problème, rétorquent les semenciers, "si un agriculteur a le sentiment qu'une culture apporte plus de problèmes que d'avantages, ils cesseront de l'utiliser" a déclaré Mike Wach, directeur général de Biotechnology Industry Organization, un groupement de semenciers. Les agriculteurs paient, les consommateurs trinquent, les firmes jubilent...

Pas vraiment convaincu, Charles Benbrook, responsable de l'étude au sein de The Organic Center, avance qu'"avec les mauvaises herbes résistantes au glyphosate [molécule active du Roundup] qui infestent aujourd'hui des millions d'hectares, les agriculteurs font face à une augmentation des coûts combinée parfois avec des pertes de rendement importantes". "Ce rapport confirme ce que nous disons depuis des années", a aussi déclaré Bill Freese, analyste du Center for Food Safety (observatoire de la sécurité alimentaire). Les "cultures génétiquement modifiées entrainent l'utilisation accrue de pesticides [ce qui engendre] une épidémie de mauvaises herbes résistantes, et une hausse des quantités de résidus chimiques dans nos aliments. Cela est peut être rentable pour les fabricants de pesticides et d'OGM, mais ce sont des mauvaises nouvelles pour l'agriculture, la santé humaine et l'environnement".

ROUNDUP DE MONSANTO: EFFETS TOXIQUES SUR LA SANTE HUMAINE

Etude sur les effets du Roundup sur des cellules humaines - Avril 2007

L’équipe du Professeur Séralini à l’Université de Caen vient de publier un article sur les effets toxiques jusqu’alors inconnus du Roundup sur des cellules embryonnaires humaines. Le Roundup de Monsanto est le principal herbicide utilisé au monde, y compris sur OGM alimentaires...

Les cellules embryonnaires sont issues d’une lignée cultivée au laboratoire qui ne nécessite pas de destruction d’embryon. L’équipe a voulu confirmer et approfondir la compréhension des effets déjà observés sur les cellules provenant de placenta, auxquelles elles ont été comparées, et sur lesquelles la même équipe avait publié en 2005. Les cellules d’embryon sont bien plus sensibles. Les actions délétères du Roundup sont relevées à partir de doses très faibles (le produit vendu en magasin est dilué jusqu’à 10.000 fois) et elles sont confirmées, en particulier au niveau de la perturbation des hormones sexuelles à des doses non toxiques, notamment avec des extraits de placenta frais. Ces doses correspondent aux doses discutées pour être autorisées dans certains OGM tolérants au Roundup aux Etats-Unis.

Il est mis en évidence que c’est le produit Roundup tel que vendu qui est beaucoup plus toxique que le produit qui est connu et homologué pour être son principe actif, le glyphosate. Les lacunes de la réglementation européenne sur l’étude des mélanges et des perturbateurs hormonaux sont soulignées. Ces travaux pourront peut-être permettre de mieux comprendre les problèmes de fausses couches, de naissances prématurées, ou de malformations sexuelles chez les bébés, entre autres de couples d’agriculteurs.

Are we witnessing the fall of the republic or the rise of the resistance?

We have reached a fork in the road, a crossroads, and the latest film by Alex Jones, The Fall of the Republic, makes our choices clear.

Whether we live in the USA or Europe, we are watching the accelerating speed with which republics and democratic states are being transformed into dictatorships.

Regional dictatorships are emerging in the form of the North American Union and the European Union.

These totalitarian systems will, in turn, be subsumed under a single global dictatorship controlled by the WHO, the UN and the IMF. Behind the UN complex is a corporate crime syndicate that uses these bodies as vehicles for their grab for world domination, also by declaring a pandemic emergency which has given WHO and the UN extraordinary powers over the national governments around the world, including health services and police services.

Alex Jones’s latest DVD, The Fall of the Republic, describes how a predatory financial elite is currently consolidating their power, and is the follow up on the illuminating documentary, The Obama Deception.

The new film -- about to be released and discussed on Infowars -- makes it clear that we must choose between slavery and liberty.

If we take the wrong turning on the fork in the road ahead of us, we will be entering a period of impenetrable darkness, a polar night of history with FEMA concentration camps, barbed wire, wars and famines, forced military or labour service in a police state using nano chips as a means to accomplish a total electronic surveillance of every single person every minute of the day.

Every day we see more evidence of how democracy in the USA is being replaced by an obligatory ecstatic worship of the dictator/president.

It is glaringly obvious that the cult of personality being built around President Obama is just a instrument in a cynical game, a means of strengthening the centralized control of a banking clique pulling the strings of its puppets in Washington DC.

Children are being trained in schools to sing songs of worship of the man-god "Obama“: they are not singing these songs spontaneously of their own free will.

Respect for the Constitution and Bill of Rights is being replaced by the cult of universal genius and charisma of the President; soon the president/dictator will be the only free person left in the USA and his whims will be the only law.

Genuine government involving a reasoned debate about policies has already been replaced by an extensive network of bureaucrats and Czars, who act as obedient instruments ready to do the will of the President whatever that might be.

A hierarchical and centralized electronic surveillance state is already in place thanks to the Patriot Act and other measures. The surveillance state, under cover of claiming to protect agains terrorists, aims to destroy individuality and free-thinking and eliminate anyone who does not bow down to the cult of the president and submit to the ideology.

Free thinking people have been labelled terrorists.

A totalitarian structure is already established that will allow the president/dictator to soon just click his fingers in a monumental building for armies to instantly march into apocalyptic wars, millions of people to be taken from their homes to FEMA camps, because food and water will be cut off from whole regions leaving many more millions to die as the elite’s depopulation program gets underway.

The bureaucrats and officials who carry out these orders and implement the regulations and rules that are being used to oppress the majority of people may obtain a certain amount of power and money in return for their services but they will not enjoy any real freedom either. They will not have any value outside their work of calculating, planning and carrying out an endless stream of crimes that the dictator demands. As soon as they have performed their function like machines, they will be dispensed with. This is what happened in Nazi Germany as well to even the most loyal functionaries.

The elite's contempt for human beings is being paraded before our eyes everyday. We see the brutal spectacle of torture, wars and famine affecting millions of people on TV, desensitizing us to the ghastly suffering of so many people today.

There is, indeed, a depressing similarity between totalitarian structures emerging today, the atmosphere of terror, the prevalent nihilism and Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union and Mao Tse Tung’s Communist China.

In the meantime, we know these totalitarian structures with the same features did not appear in different regions around the world accidentally.

Thanks also to people like Alex Jones, we know more about families such as the Rockefellers, the Windsors, the secretive networks such as the Bilderbergs and their plans for world domination. No wonder, Jay Rockefeller is rushing through a bill to dismantle the internet as information flows freely for the first time in history about this group's crimes.

The same bankers who financed the rise of the twentieth century dictators are now financing Obama and Blair, Sarkozy, Merkel and Brown.

Hiding in secret places, casting a greedy eye on the world’s resources, judging everything from the point of view of whether it can be used to increase their enjoyment or power, slaves to their own appetites, these banksters cannot be the future of humanity - and their puppets in government cannot be our rulers.

People like Frederic Mitterand, the French Minister of Culture, who says in his own autobiography that the sight of the slavery, degradation and suffering and sexual exploitation of children "excites“ him, need to be removed from office and treated for psychological problems, not praised and defended by the French Prime Minister as is the case today.

When you consider the caliber of people in government in France today, the secret French government plans to force vaccinate people with a poisonous toxin and strip them of their civic rights, plans which are being circulated by the Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot and the Justice Minister Michele Alliot Marie, are not that surprising.

A rotten tree does not bear good fruit.

Birds of a feather flock together.

Uncovering the monstrous structure of the new world order is frightening - but is also an opportunity. Now we have identified the root of the disease, we can apply the cure.

Not many people are needed to effect a change for the better.

It appears that only three per cent of the colonialists rebelled against the despotic British king. Yes, just three per cent of the colonialists were enough to start and win the first American Revolution and found an independent Republic based on a Constitution.

If the Republic does fall today, it will be because there are not even three per cent ready to rise to the occasion and save it.

But will the Republic fall? Or will the vital three per cent of the people once more step up to the plate, start and win the second American revolution by rallying others?

I believe they will. We can see the resistance growing every day.

The time has, therefore, come to think about what a new Republic and new democratic states might look like.

A revolution that unleashes mindless violence and/or a military coup that leads to tyranny instead of freedom are certainly not what we need. What is required is a systematic plan to achieve clear objectives.

"Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness“ of every person seems to me to be a valid objective.

This is the objective enshrined in the American Constitution, in the Declaration of Independence and Bill or Rights and implicit in modern European constitutions and normative law.

The American Constitution was clearly written with a consciousness of the high value of human beings and every single person. This consciousness was nourished by the soil of certain ideas found in philosophy, religion and art, especially that of the ancient Greeks.

Liberty or freedom is a central concept of the ancient Greeks who inspired the Founding Fathers and is worth taking a moment to explore.

Freedom is not only a moral or philosophical concept but also a social and a political one. The ancient Greeks understood that a person enjoyed freedom if they lived in a free state, a state that was autonomous and that passed laws that guaranteed the freedom of its citizens.

The unfree were those people who were subjected to a foreign laws and who had to serve a foreign ruler.

It is clear that we in Europe and in the USA today are indeed unfree in as far as we do not pass our own laws that serve our interests. Instead, we serve the puppet governments who obey foreign rulers in the form of a corporate crime syndicate.

These entities have corrupted, bribed and bought national governments; the laws that are now rubber stamped by our parliaments serve the interests of that corporate crime syndicate, not our interests as a people.

A huge transfer of wealth has taken place under the cover of wars, economic collapses from the people to this tiny syndicate.

For impoverished populations suffering from the mismanagement of these criminals, the bankers have a solution: a police surveillance state, concentration camps, FEMA camps and now mass murder through biological warfare under the cover of vaccines and even famine.

Freedom has too often come to be understood by the people in the USA and Europe as the freedom of choice when it comes to careers, cars, leisure pursuits etc. People are used to thinking about economic freedom and not political freedom. They are encouraged to think of freedom as the opportunity to satisfy their desires, no matter how destructive to them or others those desires might be.

By contrast, the ancient Greeks defined a free person as someone who lives in a free state, a state whose political and social system allows them to enjoy personal freedom and also directly shape the future of their country themselves. This implies participation in the political process that goes far beyond casting a vote in elections once in every four years for either two parties, which have more or less the same policies, and which work for the same paymasters.

Real democracy requires that free and informed citizens engage every day in the political decision making process, and debate and discuss the best policies or the state as a whole on a continuous basis.

Authentic freedom for the ancient Greeks was the right to make your own choices every day, so that you can develop your highest self, your latent talents, live out your unique life purpose in harmony with the deeper purpose of the cosmos, itself ordered by the divine principles of harmony and justice.

To do this, the ancient Greeks recognized that people needed a functioning free political system state - and they had to give a portion of their time to maintaining that state.

Justice demanded that each citizen enjoyed the same freedom and dignity and that the freedom and dignity of others was protected against the abuses of others.

Those who infringed on the freedom of others or committed crimes were held to account.

Athens was indeed the first democratic state founded on the rule of law. The idea of law was religious in origin. The ancient Greeks considered laws as coming ultimately from a divine source just as the laws in the Old Testament come from God even if the laws of ancient Greece had a more secular and rational character. Athens was unusual for its time because it was ruled by laws and by a free people and not by a dictator or a god-king with absolute power.

Central to the functioning of the free city state of Athens was the notion of responsibility. The ancient Greeks believed no human being can evade the consequences of their actions. Everything is interconnected. A wise, free, strong state must be built on the wise, strong, just characters of its citizens.

That the cosmos itself will react and push back when the actions of people infringe basic laws is an idea central also to Greek drama.

While people may enjoy freedom, creative power, great potential for happiness, they are also responsible for what they do; they are responsible for whether they use their energy and freedom to develop their character to become more wise, courageous, just, virtuous, honest, brave, disciplined, loving and caring.

They are responsible if they misuse their freedom to sink into ignorance, apathy, greed, materialism and corruption.

Indeed, Athens fell to tyranny as its people became more and more corrupted and materialistic.

A new beginning for a new Republic and new democratic states in Europe, means, in my view, that we need to support the development of people’s physical, emotional and intellectual abilities and talents through education, sport, work and the arts, like music, for example.

That way, people will not only enjoy more fulfilling lives themselves; they will also be able to better contribute to the overall prosperity and success of their nation or state.

Today, people are all to often reduced to animal-like existences, to wage slaves or cogs in a corporate machine, given minimum wages or benefits, poor quality food and even poisons by an international corporate crime syndicate that sees an advantage to keeping people in a degraded, ignorant and pliant state.

Today, we have a culture that is run by the likes of the French Minister for Culture, Frederic Mitterand, who openly revels in his decadent appetites, which he satisfies at the expense of the life and health of young and vulnerable people, whom any decent person would try to assist.

A new beginning for a new Republic and democratic era also requires a new appreciation for what it means to be part of a community in my view.

Today, the assault on the family, the community, the church, on anything that holds people together, has resulted in the atomization of society, in the isolation of people who have been demoted to being not members of humanity but to being part of a “herd”, of the “masses”, estranged from one another and also from themselves.

This alienation makes people miserable and results in a feeling of powerlessness.

A really new beginning requires establishing a framework for government that allows people to feel safe and secure and also gives them the space to live the lives they wish to, as long as they do not harm their fellow human beings.

Today, by contrast, the state has become an apparatus for the constant and minute surveillance and control of people. Violence and the fear of violence has become pervasive. Current laws criminalize just about everyone under the pretext of fighting terrorism - and now the swine flu pandemic.

The Constitution introduces a minimum of rules to ensure that citizens are safe and secure in their pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. There is not a word extra.

A new beginning means also establishing an economic system based on sound money and where people are allowed to build their own homes, put up their own energy systems, like solar panels and grow their own food with their own hands if necessary.

Today, people are stripped of the capacity to provide for themselves and also deprived of adequate benefits from the government.

In the USA, the bankers have thrown 40 million Americans out of their homes; men, women and children have been left to starve and freeze to death while 18 million houses stand empty.

We need to establish an education system where people are actively encouraged to think for themselves, to use their reason and not to submit in blind obedience to authority as people are trained to do today.

It is time to give people a solid education, accurate information and not a stream of half truths, lies and shallow opinions as is currently the case.

The hidden networks like freemasons and secret services that control the media and governments have to be dismantled.

There must be transparency, accountability, a genuine separation of powers among the branches of government, checks and balances that work and a media that is critical and independent – and not just an instrument of propaganda and deception.

A new beginning means putting in place a culture that helps people to develop their higher selves, their creative, productive, happy, virtuous side.

This new beginning is within our reach. We are at a turning point.

Millions of people are waking up around the world to how their political and economic systems are being manipulated by the international corporate crime syndicate. Many people want to take action – and they must do so if they want to live in freedom and dignity.

Our churches have not taken action. Our police have not taken action. These institutions have sanctioned this slide into a new era of darkness and barbarity.

We, the people, must take action whether we live in Europe or in the USA to stop the establishment of this monstrous, global totalitarian system under WHO, the UN and IMF.

Even if the US or other country's military were to carry out a coup, as some have suggested, and remove the top level of the network of operatives working for the corporate bankers, which has become embedded in its own organization, in governments, in labs and corporations, the military alone cannot restore the Republic.

Any military will need the help of millions of brave, informed, intelligent and disciplined citizens.

Before we can enjoy a new era of freedom and prosperity, security and happiness, in a political and legal framework based on a return to the Constitution and the rule of law, we have to clearly demonstrate by our actions that we really deserve that freedom, that we are willing to endure risks and hardships for that freedom and that we have thought deeply about what we will do with that freedom.

If history is anything to go by, just three per cent of us taking decisive action will be enough to stop dictatorship being established in Europe and the USA and resurrect the real democracy.

In a radical report, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has said the system of currencies and capital rules which binds the world economy is not working properly, and was largely responsible for the financial and economic crises.

It added that the present system, under which the dollar acts as the world's reserve currency , should be subject to a wholesale reconsideration.

Although a number of countries, including China and Russia, have suggested replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency, the UNCTAD report is the first time a major multinational institution has posited such a suggestion.

In essence, the report calls for a new Bretton Woods-style system of managed international exchange rates, meaning central banks would be forced to intervene and either support or push down their currencies depending on how the rest of the world economy is behaving.

The proposals would also imply that surplus nations such as China and Germany should stimulate their economies further in order to cut their own imbalances, rather than, as in the present system, deficit nations such as the UK and US having to take the main burden of readjustment.

"Replacing the dollar with an artificial currency would solve some of the problems related to the potential of countries running large deficits and would help stability," said Detlef Kotte, one of the report's authors. "But you will also need a system of managed exchange rates. Countries should keep real exchange rates [adjusted for inflation] stable. Central banks would have to intervene and if not they would have to be told to do so by a multilateral institution such as the International Monetary Fund."

The proposals, included in UNCTAD's annual Trade and Development Report , amount to the most radical suggestions for redesigning the global monetary system.

Although many economists have pointed out that the economic crisis owed more to the malfunctioning of the post-Bretton Woods system, until now no major institution, including the G20 , has come up with an alternative.
